"If you receive a call from 'technical support,' end the call, do not install or allow someone else to install any programmes that would enable remote connections on your computer or mobile phone," Risu warned. The head of Helsinki police's cybercrime unit, Jukkapekka Risu, said people need to be wary of being contacted out of the blue. Scammers have been specifically targeting the elderly in Finland recently, according to police. In June, for example, police reported two similar incidents in which two victims had each been conned out of as much as 30,000 euros. Police said these kinds of scams come to their attention on a nearly daily basis. Police: Hang up on supposed 'tech support' callers The suspected crime took place on Monday, 17 August, and authorities are investigating the incident as aggravated fraud and identity theft. Using these documents and computer access, the scammer made two separate withdrawals of 50,000 euros from the victim's bank account and transferred the funds into a foreign bitcoin brokerage firm, according to police. Upon the scammer's request, the man also provided bank account information and his driver's license. He was asked to install software, TeamViewer, which allowed the scammers to take complete control of his PC. The scam began with the victim receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to be from the Microsoft support team who told him they needed access to his computer. A Helsinki man was fleeced out of 100,000 euros by scammers posing as Microsoft support staff, according to the city's police department.
